Introduction

During my family’s move from Oklahoma to Idaho this spring, I took some time off of High Desert Yarn. Surprisingly, my creative energy needed it more that I could guess. Rest clears the mental space of my brain and allows me to create again with joy. So, I began playing with different crochet stitches and my favorite cotton yarn to create the Sonora Plant Cozy Collection.

After the drive from Oklahoma to Idaho, my family and I couldn’t dive into the unpacking, since our new house wasn’t officially ours yet. No cleaning, organizing, or settling in. It nearly felt like a vacation! Relishing in the slow mornings of drinking coffee, and exploring Boise, ID to our hearts’ content.

As a family, we slowed our pace, and reconnected with each other. We came out of those two weeks rested, and rejuvenated to tackle moving into our new house. This (rest + rejuvenation) is exactly what I wanted my next pattern to feel like — a vacation full of rest. So, the Sonora (hanging) Plant Cozy was designed.

Inspiration + Design

Rest + Rejuvenation is at the center of the Sonora (hanging) Plant Cozy. It is a simple, repetitive stitch sequence that works quickly, and yields a light textured fabric. This pretty plant cozy starts to transform any room, bookshelf, or space with a spa-like feel. Also, it slides into a few different home decor styles — boho, desert-vibes, and farmhouse — by changing the colors. The faded, warm oranges/pinks give the plant cozies desert vibes for my home decor style. However, a natural/tan yarn would be perfect for a boho-chic room. But, if you’re more into a farmhouse or french country, then I would choose a crisp white, cream, or dusty blue. No matter what color you choose, your houseplants with standout in the Sonora (hanging) Plant Cozy.

What makes the Sonora (hanging) Plant Cozy restful and restorative? The Crossed Double Crochet Stitch! What you will love about the Crossed Double Crochet is that it’s easier than it looks, and creates a simple texture. So, if you know how to Double Crochet, you can CROSS Double Crochet!

• Yarn
  • Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, worsted/category 4 (93yds/50g), 100% Cotton
    • You will need 45yds/41m for the Medium Size
    • Substitutes : Any other worsted/category 4 yarn will work, preferably cotton
• Crochet Hook – G/6 (4.25mm) or correct hook to meet gauge

Notes

Experience Level = Advanced Beginner. You will need to have an understanding of the Single Crochet, Double Crochet, crossing stitches, and crocheting in the round before beginning this pattern.

Check your gauge! This is important if you want your plant cozy to be the same size as the pattern.

CH 1 and CH 2 at the beginning of a round DOES NOT count as a stitch, unless noted in the pattern.

Right vs. Wrong Side. The pattern is noted with RS and WS on the XDC rounds. The XDC will always be on the wrong side (inside) of the plant cozy.

What pot did I base this design on? The Sonora Hanging Planter is designed to fit three different sizes of the Exotic Angels houseplants from Costa Farms.

• Note that these are plastic pots, not ceramic or terracotta. Also, the size of these pots are not very large. I didn’t want the extra weight of the soil, water, and ceramic/terracotta pot to weigh the hanging planter down and stretch it out.

Special Stitches

Crossed Double Crochet (XDC)

The Crossed Double Crochet is an advanced beginner stitch. If you know how to Double Crochet, you’ll be able to CROSS Double Crochet! My biggest tip — pay attention to the placement of the stitches. In this pattern, the Double Crochets will be placed in a Chain Space on either side of a Single Crochet. The exception is the 1st DC ST of the XDC rounds. This stitch is placed between the turning CH and SC of the previous round.

Skip 2 STS (CH SP + SC), and place a DC in the next CH SP. Find the skipped CH SP. Place a DC in this skipped CH SP. The first XDC is complete. For the second XDC, find the next CH SP. Place a DC in this CH SP. Then, place a DC in the previous CH SP. The second XDC is complete. Each CH SP will have 2 DCs in it.

Create a MR and CH 1 into the MR.

Round 1 : 8 SC into the MR. Join to 1st ST with a SL ST. CH 1. Turn. (8 STS)

Round 2 : 2 SC in each ST around. Join to 1st ST with a SL ST. CH 1. Turn. (16 STS)

Round 3 : [2 SC in the next ST. SC.] Rep […] until end of RND. Join to 1st ST with a SL ST. CH 1. Turn. (24 STS)

• Check gauge here by measuring the diameter of the circle. It should measure approx. 2.5″.

Fasten off, and weave in all ends (unless you are making a hanging planter).

Hanging Planter Option

Creating straps for your plant cozy is as simple as creating a chain!

We will crochet 3 separate chains (of equal length) onto the top of the cozy. Then, we will carefully create a loop for hanging. Follow the detailed instructions below to add straps to your plant cozy.

• Divide the last round into thirds, and place a stitch marker in each stitch.
  • Tip – count the picots of the last round. Divide that number by 3, and place a stitch marker in each “third” picot.
• Join the yarn at the 1st stitch marker with the RS facing you, and chain any length you’d like. I created a chain of 40 with a length of 10.25″ for the medium size. Leave a long tail after each chain strap to tie them together.
  • Things to consider when you’re creating a chain length.
    • What kind of space will your plant hang in? How much space you have to let it hang in? How tall and wide is the plant you’ll be hanging? A fit check is recommended to determine correct hanging length.
• Repeat Step 2 at the 2nd and 3rd stitch markers.
• Carefully hold the 3 straps together, making sure they are even in length. Fold the ends over to create a loop in the yarn. Tie this loop around all of the straps to secure a loop for hanging.
• Place a lovely plant in its new cozy, and hang in a sunny window!
