The Briar Rose Headband is a perfect compliment to both the Triangle Scarf, and Cowl in this collection. The delicate texture gives this autumn headband an elegant feel with a bit of whimsy. Ideal for the sense of magic in the crisp autumn air!
This headband not only looks stunning, but is extra thick while using a DK (3) weight yarn. The Stacked Spike Stitch provides extra warmth with its close knit stitching. Breezes will have a hard time getting through this headband! Also, the Briar Rose Headband features a beautiful border of Puff and Crossed Half Double Crochet Stitches. Sized from baby through adult large, you can make one for the whole family!
Design for the Briar Rose Headband
As much as I love working with this Cloudcroft DK weight yarn, I struggled designing a functional headband with the smaller weight yarn. Crocheting a handmade wardrobe only goes so far as it’s intended purpose. If the beanie or headband doesn’t keep your noggin warm in the colder months.. then, it wasn’t worth the effort to make it in the first place. So, I combined this delicious merino wool yarn with the Stacked Spike Stitch. This stitch allows for a flat surface but with a touch of thickness.

Yarn + Substitutes
I used a hand dyed yarn in 100% Superwash Merino Wool. If you’re not sensitive to wool yarn, I highly recommend giving a 100% SW Merino Wool a try. Crocheting autumn and winter accessories in wool yarn has changed my life. The warmth I retain while wearing wool exponentially outweighs the warmth I retain when I wear an acrylic or nylon accessory. If you’re looking for a crocheted accessory to be fully functional this autumn, you won’t go wrong with a 100% SW Merino Wool.
For this triangle scarf, you will need approximately 532yds in a DK (category 3) weight yarn. I’m using the Autumn Rose colorway from my Etsy Shop. You can browse this colorway here.

- Experience Level – Intermediate
- You will need to know how to Spike Stitch, Puff Stitch, and crocheting into the 3rd loop before starting this pattern.
- CH 1 (turning chain) at the end of a row DOES NOT COUNT as a stitch.
- Stitch pattern is a multiple of 2.
- This pattern is worked in turning rows.
- Stitch counts are written as Baby (Toddler, Child, Adult S, Adult M, Adult L).

The fit of this headband is snug. The pattern is written to account for 2” of negative ease.

Special Stitches
Stacked Spike Stitch
The Spike Stitch is worked by alternating Single Crochets into the working row, and the row below. This pattern “stacks” the Spike Stitch on top of each other, by alternating where the Single Crochets are placed from row to row. Similar to the Lemon Peel Stitch that alternates Single Crochet and Double Crochet. Find the Video Tutorial Here.
Crossed Half Double Crochet
The XHDC is worked over two (2) stitches.
- Skip 1 ST.
- HDC into the next ST.
- HDC in the previous ST. You will “cross” over the first HDC into the skipped ST.
- XHDC is complete.
Puff Stitch
- YO, insert hook into next ST. YO, and pull up loop. (3 loops on hook)
- YO, insert hook into next ST. YO, and pull up loop. (5 loops on hook)
- YO, insert hook into next ST. YO, and pull up loop. (7 loops on hook)
- YO, pull through all 7 loops.
- Puff Stitch is complete.
Gauge
- 16 sts x 20 rows = 4×4”
- Gauge is measured before blocking.
- Use the Stacked Spike Stitch to create a gauge swatch prior to starting this pattern.

Create a chain the length of 53 (61, 69, 77, 81, 85)
Row 1 : In the 2nd CH from the hook, SC. SC in each CH until the end of row. [52 (60, 68, 76, 80, 84) STS].
Row 2 : Turn, CH 1, SC in each ST until end of the row. [52 (60, 68, 76, 80, 84) STS].
Row 3 (Spike Stitch) : Turn, CH 1, *SC in the next ST, SC in the ST in the row below, rep from * until the last st. SC in the last ST (do not place it in the row below). [52 (60, 68, 76, 80, 84) STS].
Rows 4 – 5 : Rep Row 3
Row 6 : Turn, CH 1, HDC in each ST of the row. [52 (60, 68, 76, 80, 84) STS].
Row 7 : Turn, CH 1, SC in 1st ST, SC 3rd loop only until the last ST, SC in the last ST. [52 (60, 68, 76, 80, 84) STS].
Row 8 : Turn, CH 1, SC in 1st ST, SL ST in each ST until the last ST, SC in the last ST. [52 (60, 68, 76, 80, 84) STS].
Row 9 : (All stitches are worked in the top two loops of the SCs in Row 8. This pushes the SL STs to the front of the fabric.) Turn, CH 1, SC in each ST across. [52 (60, 68, 76, 80, 84) STS].
Rows 10 – 13 : Repeat Row 3
Row 14 (Top Border) : Turn, CH 1, HDC in 1st ST, * PUFF in next ST, XHDC in next ST, rep from * until 1 ST remains, HDC in the last ST. [52 (60, 68, 76, 80, 84) STS]. Depending on your size, you may end up with an extra stitch in the repeat. Continue the repeat until 1 ST remains, then place a HDC in the last ST.
Cut yarn, and leave a long tail to seam the short sides together.
Turn the headband upside down to add the bottom border to the chain edge (bottom edge). Attach yarn with a SL ST, and repeat Row 14 along this edge. Fasten off and weave in the end.
Use this video tutorial to join the ends of the headband together to create the Top Knot look.
