Welcome to the first section of the Rainbow Crochet Blanket Pattern & CAL (crochet along)! For this section, we focus on the Half Double Crochet Cluster stitch. It creates a flat fabric with a bit of lacy drape. It’s a new-to-me crochet stitch, and I can’t wait to show you how it’s made!

  • US Crochet Terms used throughout
  • CH 1 the beginning of the row does NOT count as a stitch.
  • Stitch multiple is 3+2.
  • The first 2 rows, and stitch counts throughout, reference the Rainbow Blanket Crochet Pattern designed by Juniper & Oakes and High Desert Yarn.

Stitch Abbreviations

MC – Main Color
CC – Contrasting Color
HDC – Half Double Crochet
CH – Chain
ST(S) – Stitch(es)
SK – Skip
REP – Repeat

Written Instructions

Chain 133.
Row 1: In MC, HDC in the 2nd CH, HDC in each CH across, turn. (132 sts)
Row 2: CH 1, HDC in each st across, turn. (132 sts)
Row 3: In CC, CH 1, HDC in first st, * SK st, 3 HDC in next st, SK st, rep from * until 2 sts remain, HDC in last 2 sts, turn. (132 sts)
Row 4: CH 1, HDC in 2 sts, SK st, 3 HDC in next st, *SK next 2 sts, 3 HDC in next st, rep from * until 2 sts remain, SK st, HDC in last st, turn. (132 sts)
Rep Rows 3-4, or until the section measures 4” high.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
