Halloween does not need to be scary, and I look for ways to add touches of magic to my home without chilling anyone’s bones.

Inspiration for the Jacquie Lantern Pot Holder
In 2024 I began designing the Spooky Season Mosaic Blanket by playing around with jack o lantern faces. What started as a swatch for the blanket, quickly turned into a pot holder. Last year, there wasn’t enough time to design and test a whole blanket pattern. However, I could design a pot holder.
As a bonus – my kitchen needed an updated decor element. The previous autumn pot holders looked a little bare. That’s enough of a fright for me!

- Yarn : I Love This Cotton Yarn (180yds/100g), 100% Cotton
- You will need 2 colors.
- Color A (orange) = 40yds
- Color B (black) = 83yds
- You will need 2 colors.
- Crochet Hook : H (5.00mm) or hook to obtain gauge
- Notions : scissors, tapestry needle.
Notes
- Experience Level – Advanced Beginner
- Please check gauge prior to starting this pattern.
- CH 1 (turning chain) at the end of a border round DOES NOT COUNT as a stitch.
- Please read through the Rules of Overlay Mosaic Crochet prior to starting Side 1.
Rules of Overlay Mosaic Crochet
- Color Changes – Each row is crocheted with a single color (Color A or Color B).
- Cut Yarn After Each Row – Do not weave in ends. We will secure the ends with a knot, and tuck them in while seaming Side 1 and Side 2 together.
- Border Stitches – Each row begins and ends with a Center Single Crochet. This stitch is made under BOTH top loops. Click here for a photo tutorial.
- BLO SC – Every Single Crochet (besides the border stitches) is made in the back loop only.
- FLO DC – Every Double Crochet will go in the front loop of the 2nd row from the one you’re working in. So, skip the row you normally work in, and crochet into the Front Loop of the next row below.
- Turning the work – Do not turn your work. Always crochet from the Right to Left (right handed crocheters) or Left to Right (left handed crocheters).

Border
Continue with Color A, and begin the Half Double Crochet Border all the way around Side 1. Ch 1, Hdc in each row along the edges, and in each stitch. Every corner will have 3 stitches. Fasten off, and weave in the yarn end.

Crochet Side 2 (ribbing side)
With Color B, ch 30.
Row 1 (RS) : HDC In the 2nd ch from the hook, HDC in each ch across. (29 STS)
Row 2 (WS) : Ch 1, turn, HDC 3rd loop in each st across. (29 STS)
Row 3 (RS) : Ch 1, turn, HDC in each st across. (29 STS)
Rows 4 – 17 : Repeat Rows 2-3
Border
Begin the HDC Border all the way around Side 2. Be sure to match the stitch count along the edge of Side 2 to the row count of Side 1 (23 rows = 23 stitches). Every corner will have 3 HDC stitches.
Once the border is stitched, cut a long tail of yarn in Color B. Place the Wrong Sides together for the two pieces, and seam together with a running stitch. Tuck in ends from Side 1 as you stitch the edges. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Alternative Seaming : You can slip stitch the two sides together if you’re more comfortable with that technique.
Optional : Create a loop with a chain of any length, and sew it into a corner.
