Inspiration

Growing enough sunflowers to line my backyard fence is a perennial dream of mine. Their golden slender petals, and large dark centers, put a smile on my face every time I see one. Also, did you know that sunflowers rotate throughout the day so that they always face the sun? What a lesson to learn — to continually chase after the thing that gives you life, and lifts your soul, no matter the weather.

Design

The Savannah Sunflower Wall Hanging is crocheted in three parts — the center circle, the petals, and then the border is crocheted around the petals. The center circle features the Puff Stitch to mimic the sunflower seeds, and is crocheted in the round. Next, the petals are crocheted directly onto the center circle one by one. Last, the border joins the petals together, and gives this wall hanging a boho aesthetic. The tassels are optional, but I love to add them to projects!

Yarn + Substitutes

Cotton yarn is used in this crochet pattern. It specifically uses Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. If you haven’t tried this yarn, I highly recommend! It’s becoming one of my favorite yarn lines for its range of colors, and affordability. I suggest sticking to cotton yarn, but any material will work. Scroll down to the Tester Portfolio to see what the Savannah Sunflower Wall Hanging looks like in different yarns.

  • Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, category 4 (1.7oz/50g, 93yds/85m), 100% cotton
    • You need 3 different colors total.
      • MC (black) – 17yds/15m
      • CC1 (yellow) – 53yds/48m
      • CC2 (natural) – 82yds/75m

Gauge + Finished Sizes

The gauge is based off the petals. This will give you a idea an idea of the final width the flower portion. Although gauge is not greatly important for a wall hanging, I do suggest working a swatch so you know if you’re finished piece will be larger or smaller than the patterns states.

16 STS x 20 Rows = 4″ x 4″ square in SC
Gauge is measured before blocking.

Finished Size
13″ width
15″ length (w/o tassels)
20″ length (w/ tassels)
Measurements are taken after blocking.
