Crochet Puff Stitch (5 Loop) Tutorial

The Puff Stitch is one of the easiest crochet stitches to add texture to a hat, sweater, or wall hanging. This tutorial is for the 5 Loop variation, and works best with any bulky (category 5), and super bulky (category would 6) yarn. Did you miss my tutorial on the classic Puff Stitch with 7 loops? Materials Needed

  • Yarn — Lion Brand Hometown USA, super bulky/ category 6 (5oz/142g, 81yds/74m)
  • Crochet Hook — M/13 (9.00mm)

Abbreviations

  • YO — yarn over
  • ST — stitch
  • CH — chain

Written Instructions

YO and insert hook into next ST. YO and pull up loop through ST. (Three loops on hook.) YO and insert hook into same ST. (Four loops on hook.) YO and pull up loop through ST. (Five loops on hook.) YO and pull through all loops on hook.

The Puff Stitch is complete.

Some crochet patterns “lock” the puff stitch with a CH 1. However, not all patterns are written this way. In certain patterns, the CH 1 will jumble the Puff Stitches and cause ruffling in the fabric, since the Puff Stitches are placed next to each other (like my Pumpkin Spice Wall Hanging). Pay attention to the pattern, and ask the designer for help if you need it.
