Halloween is hands down my favorite holiday of the year. As a kid, my school held a huge carnival where everyone from the small town showed up in their costumes. Then, a few nights later my mom would always take me trick or treating throughout the neighborhood. Halloween night felt magical as a kid, and I want to still feel that magic as an adult.

Last year I dreamt of making a massive Halloween Crochet Blanket using overlay mosaic techniques. So, the designing and planning and crocheting slowly got underway. As much as I had hoped to finish this blanket in 2024, in reality it took me nearly 10 months to complete. Sometimes I needed to put it aside for other crochet projects, and life events with my family.

This year, I cannot wait to watch Hocus Pocus with my kids under my massive Halloween Crochet Blanket.

Overlay Mosaic Crochet… What?

If you are brand new to overlay mosaic crochet… welcome! This is a great pattern for you to dive straight into this fun crochet technique. The basic stitches of overlay mosaic crochet include ….drum roll…. Single Crochet and Double Crochet.

Yup. You read that right.

All you need to know is how to single crochet, double crochet, and identifying the front or back loop of a stitch. Each row is crocheted from right to left, and is different color. (example – Row 1 is crocheted in black. Row 2 is crocheted in orange. Row = black. Row 4 = orange.)

The yarn ends are left exposed, which could give you an anxiety attack. But the good news is that you don’t need to worry about weaving them in at the end! The pattern uses an envelope border to tuck in all the ends. There is a bit more to Overlay Mosaic Crochet, like how to read the chart, but we’ll get to those details on week 1 of the CAL. As I designed the Spooky Season Mosaic Crochet Blanket, I wanted to release it as a project for our community. Crocheting with other people is an incredible delight! Even though we’re not in person, it’s so encouraging to see other people’s progress, share mine, and ask for help. Community is one of my favorite things about the yarn world.

Let’s Talk About the Yarn + Materials

You need at least 2 different colors to create the Spooky Season Mosaic Crochet Blanket. The pattern suggests using 4 colors to create the alternating colors of each section. Feel free to mix and match to create your unique blanket!

No matter the colors you choose, you will need a Worsted Weight (category 4), 100% acrylic yarn. I do not suggest changing the yarn size. If you must, then please work a gauge swatch to determine your final blanket size.

This pattern comes in 3 different sizes so you can make the Halloween Blanket of your nightmares! The sample size is the largest size offered, and comfortably fits a queen size bed.

How to Change Sizes

You can change the width of your blanket by adding to subtracting chart repeats.
- Create a starting chain of [ (# of Repeats) x 20 ] + 3
  - EX. Lapghan = [ (7) x 20 ] + 3
  - Lapghan = 140 + 3 = 143 chains
You can change the length of your blanket by repeating any section after completing Section 7. Or leaving out any section from your blanket.
Be sure to make a gauge swatch BEFORE starting this crochet pattern if you’re changing the size of your blanket.
