Inspiration + Design

The Kalena Crochet Wall Hanging is born out of boredom. Midway through the summer, my creative flow dammed up with the debris of chores, tasks, and must-dos. About three crochet projects were started, and promptly put down. So, I needed something that would ignite my excitement to crochet, create, and FINISH a project.

Simplicity is the main idea in the Kalena Crochet Wall Hanging. This crochet pattern features beginner friendly stitches — Half Double Crochet, and Double Crochet. Plus, there’s a new stitch to learn — the Chainless Starting Double Crochet! This crochet stitch is the key in keeping the edges straight and neat.

Endless Summer CAL 2021

Update June 2022 : Like all good things, this CAL is over. However, if you decide to crochet this wall hanging, please share a photo of it in the High Desert Yarn Handmade Community! We’d love to see it, and cheer you on your yarning adventures.

The dog days of summer are here in the northern hemisphere. Man, it’s hot, humid, and hazy outside. Therefore, crocheting doesn’t always sound enjoyable, unless you want to replicate a sauna. So, it’s the perfect recipe for a crochet=a-long to start the creative juices flowing. Consider the Endless Summer Crochet-a-long (CAL) as your warmup for the autumn crochet season.

Yarn + Substitutions

BIG NEWS!
High Desert Yarn is officially launching its
new hand dyed yarn with the Kalena Wall Hanging.

The Sno Cone Mini DK Skeins played a big role in getting my creativity out of the slump this summer. These six colors are reminiscent of sno cone flavors — from lemon lime, blue coconut, to tiger’s blood, there’s a flavor for everyone! This mini skein set is dyed on the Cloudcroft DK Base — 100% Superwash Merino Wool in a DK (category 3) weight, and each mini skein is 24yds/10g. You can find this mini skein set, with a crochet kit upgrade for the Kalena Wall Hanging, in my Etsy Shop.

Substitutions for the Kalena Crochet Wall Hanging

The beauty of this wall hanging pattern is that any yarn weight will work. However, if you’d like a yarn closer to the weight of the Sno Cone Mini Set, then I suggest using the Lion Brand Mandala. You’ll get your six colors needed to make this wall hanging in just a single cake. But, my favorite option would be to use up your stash! Pick as many colors as you want, and in the weight you want. Let your creativity flow with this crochet project!

Notes

Check your gauge! If you want your wall hanging to be the same size as the pattern, please check gauge prior to starting this pattern. This is extra important if you are using a different yarn than the pattern.

Chain 1 at the end of a row DOES NOT count as a stitch.

Chain 3 at the beginning of Row 1 DOES count as a stitch.

Gauge + Finished Size

19 STS x 9 Rows = 4″ x 4″ square

  • Stitches are measured on the DC row.
  • Gauge is measured before blocking.

Follow Rows 4 – 6 in the pattern.

6.5″ wide x 23″ length

Chainless Starting Double Crochet (CSDC)
Turn your work so that you are staring a new row. Pull up a loop as tall as a DC. Wrap hook around the loop you pulled up. This acts as ONE loop on the hook making TWO loops on the hook. Insert hook into the 1st ST. Yarn over and pull up one loop. There are THREE loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through TWO loops. Yarn over and pull through remaining TWO loops. The CSDC is complete.

Attaching the Dowel and Adding the Twine

Place the wall hanging right side down, so that you attach the dowel to the wrong side (wall side) of the wall hanging. Crochet the dowel onto the wall hanging with using a SC in each ST of the top of the wall hanging. Fasten off, and weave in end. Last, attach your spare piece of twine, yarn, or crochet thread to hang your finished piece.
