Bring a Sparkly Ocean into Your Home with this Free Crochet Wall Hanging Pattern

Inside – Learn how to create a beautiful home décor piece using the Sunshine Waves free crochet wall hanging pattern.

This April marked the three-year anniversary of living in Boise, ID! My family fell in love with this city immediately. Our new house had a great layout, and was “move in ready” – two things we hoped for. However, the fresh paint job was a dirty beige color – the one thing I didn’t hope for.

After two years of enjoying a project-free house (our time in Oklahoma was project after project after project), I finally decided that the dirty beige walls needed to go. So, I started with the downstairs bathroom. I wanted a bright, beach-inspired vibe including a cascading wall of pothos plants to act as a curtain for the large window.

A few peeks inside the process:

Inspiration for the Sunshine Waves Wall Hanging

After it was finished, the walls needed some bright blue and golden yellow accents! As a place holder, I moved the Savannah Sunflower Wall Hanging in there, and LOVED that pop of color on the walls. But the bright blue was missing.

What does a crochet artist do? Make her own wall art! That’s exactly what led to the creation and design of the Sunshine Waves Wall Hanging!

Returning to Intarsia Crochet patterns remained on my TBD (to-de-designed) list since the release of the Desertscape Blanket. Crochet colorwork holds a special place in my heart. I wanted to design an easy project that would slow down my pace of life. Every time I picked up my hook to stitch up this crochet wall hanging I was reminded of the peace of sitting on the beach. My breath slowed as if I felt that salty breeze graze my face.

What yarn should you use for this free crochet wall hanging pattern?

Sunshine Waves Wall Hanging uses my all time favorite cotton yarn – Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran. It is a 100% cotton, worsted weight (category 4) yarn that comes in a large color palette. Check it out here!

If you’d like to substitute the Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran… you can pick another cotton yarn, or try an acrylic yarn. Be careful switching to another cotton yarn. Not all “worsted weight” cotton yarns are the same thickness. Always check your gauge before starting any crochet pattern for best results.

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Wet block your wall hanging BEFORE attaching it to the dowel.

Once your wall hanging is dry, you can add the dowel by two methods.

  1. Crochet it on – Use this video tutorial as a guide.
  2. Sew it on with a tapestry needle, and extra yarn of any color.
